Jumping Right In

hey. i'm not the best writer. but i could be a winner of jeopardy couch edition. sometimes, late at night, i pop on an occasional record to unwind. it's always something i've never heard before. the collection is just too big to worry about listening more than once.

usually, these records get taped onto minidisc for later transferral onto cd. but that would take some time. my modest collection nears 15,000 pieces of music. value is important, but not paramount. for information about my tastes, i have heavy interest in funk, acid jazz, post punk, new wave, psych (of all varieties), hard AOR rock, comedy, indie / modern rock, and groove soul/jazz. i collect in other categories like heavy metal, novelty, celebrity, cheesecake, industrial, and disco.

basically, if i haven't seen it, and its priced fair, i get it.

do you ever find yourself buying a spoken word record for some future sample that you know you will never get to cut? do you have possible gems through your collection that you bought on a record show bender but didn't play yet? do you buy more music on cd and/or vinyl than you can ever know what to do with? do you ever find yourself buying RCA Victor albums from 1955 just because you like the look of the gypsy on the cover and you know you're never going to listen. ever.

who has the time? who cares. that's the Infection.

i'm a crate digger, the Cajon Cavador. i can be found in the basements, back rooms, pawn shops, and thrifts. you can find me in any state at any time doing the 'scrape'.

i guess i am starting this blog to express my thoughts on various lp's as they come up. i have been taking notes for a long time on paper, but i figure it'd be good to share some stuff with readers who want to know.

Tonights first listen:

Argent - Argent (2nd side)
This was a nice smooth record, by rod argent from the Zombies. my descriptions will be amateur sometimes, but this record was a cross between pink floyd & moody blues without all the pomp and circumstance. the cd is out on two different versions of 2-on-1's. rod argent plays keyboards and it was better than i expected, as i only had previously ever heard the obvious (WZZO for me) classic radio hit 'hold your head up'. i would listen again on cd and i would deem this ipod / burner worthy.

Harumi - harumi (4 sided LP) Verve/Forecast 1968
I've still got this one churning. side 1 was a 24 minute double spoken word bit by Harumi and some English guy. Harumi mumbles along in lilted Japanese while the English guy intersperses super hypnotizing slow-talker mumbo-jumbo. it was hard to listen to each and every phrase, especially while trying to keep this blog typing up, but i heard a lot of strange stuff about pregnant dogs, rice cakes (for fatha!), bean curds, and Mt. Fuji looking like a big ice cream.

side 2 and 3 have some nice soft late 60's pop. it sounds like a sedated elvis costello on a late 60's string arrangement swank pop show.

the artwork on this is pretty cool, color double gatefold. harumi and his pals are on the back in blue robes.
